The Center for Watershed Sciences is happy to announce that our Director, Jay Lund, has won the internationally acclaimed Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Prize for Water (PSIPW). On July 26th, 2020, the PSIPW recognized five scientists, researchers, and innovators for their work in addressing global water scarcity, including Jay Lund in the Water Management & Protection category. Congratulations, Dr. Lund!

Lund was acknowledged for his leadership in the development of the CALVIN Project, a large-scale water optimization model that provides solutions to manage water infrastructure throughout California, as well as his optimization modeling of other major water systems in North and Central America. Lund’s models minimize water scarcity and flood risk while lowering operating costs, and have inspired similar water optimization efforts around the world.

Lund is a Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. Since 2009, he has served as our Director here at the Center for Watershed Sciences, where he contributes to critical, interdisciplinary research on water management. Lund has participated in a number of state and federal water resources advisory boards: he was the Chair of the Delta Independent Science Board, a member of Advisory Committee for the 1998 and 2005 California Water Plan Updates, and the Convenor of the California Water and Environment Modeling Forum in 1996 and 1997. He is on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals, and he has published books and reports on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and California environmental policy issues, including climate change. Lund is also an enthusiastic educator and a frequent contributor on our California WaterBlog. In addition to PSIPW, he was been honored with several awards.
