Congress will finish fixing Natomas’ levees, experts argue that’s still not enough to lift building moratorium

Sacramento News & Review (May 29, 2014) — Jeffrey Mount, UC Davis professor emeritus of geology, questions the wisdom of building in a floodplain, in a story about a bill passed by Congress last week would authorize the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to use federal money to finish repairing the remainder of the levees in the Natomas area of Sacramento. “It’s hard to say if it makes economic sense to improve levees if it spurs development,” said Mount, co-founder of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. “Because when the levees do eventually fail, the economic damage is very, very high.”
