1 Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in Stream Hydrology and Environmental Flows at University of California Berkeley, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management

Background Info: A collaborative research team from UC Davis and UC Berkeley seeks applicants for two postdoctoral research associates, for one year with the potential for renewal for an additional year. The research is supported by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The successful candidates will help execute and guide a collaborative data synthesis project aimed at improving predictions of summer and winter baseflows in California streams and understanding the consequences of baseflow alteration to fish assemblage dynamics and/or additional fish response variables (e.g., recruitment, growth, etc.).  The candidates will have the opportunity to interact extensively with resource biologists at CDFW and a team of researchers working on the development of the California Environmental Flows Framework.

Stream Hydrology and Environmental Flows Postdoc

Position Description: The ideal candidate will have a strong background in stream hydrology and an understanding of freshwater ecology and environmental flows. The candidate will be responsible for applying hydrologic modeling techniques to predict winter and summer baseflow dynamics in California streams. The candidate will compile relevant datasets and develop a hydrologic modeling approach for predicting streamflow metrics and evaluating model uncertainty. The candidate will prepare at least one peer-reviewed publication and will also have opportunities to explore independent lines of research inquiry. The candidate will be based at UC Berkeley in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management.

Minimum qualifications: PhD in hydrology, water resources engineering, or related field.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with 1) expertise in hydrologic modeling and environmental flows; 2) strong communication and organizational skills; 3) exceptional data management skills and interest in transparent and reproducible science; and 4) a strong publication record. Fish Ecology and Environmental Flows Postdoc

Position Description: The ideal candidate for the postdoc will have a strong background in fish ecology and an understanding of environmental flows or stream hydrology.  The candidate will be responsible for acquiring long-term fish and hydrologic datasets from project partners in California. The candidate will conduct statistical analysis to relate ecological response variables to flow metrics with an emphasis on summer and winter base flow periods. A primary goal of the project will be to understand how changes in natural baseflow patterns from human activities affect native fish communities. The candidate will prepare at least one peer-reviewed publication and will also have opportunities to explore independent lines of research inquiry. The candidate will be based at the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis.

Minimum qualifications: PhD in ecology, fisheries, data science, or another relevant field.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with 1) expertise in fish ecology and environmental flows; 2) strong communication and organizational skills; 3) have experience with ecological data analysis and modeling, especially in R programming language; 4) exceptional data management skills and interest in transparent and reproducible science; and 4) a strong publication record or the potential for developing one.
