Position Title
Senior Researcher
Jon is a quantitative ecologist whose research focuses on the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems and the organisms inhabiting them, particularly in light of global change. His work covers a spectrum from advancing ecological theory and statistical methods to studies addressing specific problems in conservation and environmental resource management. He is broadly interested in what shapes the resilience and stability of ecological and social-ecological systems. One aspect of that, synchronization between different components of these systems, has been a major focus of his recent and ongoing research. Synchrony is important to stability and resilience because synchronous fluctuations reinforce each other and total to large system-wide effects, while asynchrony tends to allow some components to compensate for declines in others. Contexts for this work include: movements of California native fishes; kelp forests on the California coast; and water chemistry and algal blooms in lakes.
