Kelly K. Goedde-Matthews

Kelly joined the Freshwater Ecology Lab and Graduate Group in Ecology in 2022. Her graduate research explores the effects of flow alterations on stream habitat, food webs, and salmonids. Kelly used an outdoor stream mesocosm at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab to conduct two large streamflow experiments that each tested the effects of flow alterations on small mountain streams. To test the effects of flow reductions associated with surface water withdrawals, Kelly ran an experiment mimicking a water extraction operation with repeated short-duration flow reductions. Then she tested the effects of projected changes to streamflow (anticipated with climate change) on stream food webs and salmonids by running an experiment mimicking projected end-of-century streamflow conditions. Kelly aims to conduct research with practical implications that will help managers and policy makers conserve freshwater habitats and the species that depend upon them.
