Project Description

The Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Plant abuts the northwestern edge of Suisun Marsh, where treated wastewater is discharged into either Boynton Slough or Ledgewood Creek. While the treated water may boost food web production, concerns have emerged as to whether the source is large enough to contribute to elevated nitrogen levels in the San Francisco Bay. This study will evaluate nutrient traces from wastewater discharge to the mouth of Montezuma Slough, and use isotopic analysis to understand nitrogen incorporation into the regional food web.
