Naturalist Conference

Calling all naturalists: we're headed to the mountains!

The 2016 California Naturalist Conference is fast approaching with the conference theme to observe nature, foster partnerships, and plan for change.

The conference will run from Sepetember 9-11, 2016 at the Pali Mountain Retreat & Conference Center in Running Springs, in the beautiful San Bernadino Mountains.

Currently early registration is open, the scholarship application is posted, the call for lightning talks and posters is out, and more program content is being added daily. We are hosting a variety of advanced trainings and field trips to hone your naturalist skills and observe and explore the area's unique ecology. We will share information and ideas with experts from our own California Naturalists and from UC and other science institutions. Click here for information and content from the 2014 inaugural conference.

Plenary Speakers José G. González, Latino Outdoors; Alina Bokde, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust; Jon Christensen, UCLA; and Peter Kareiva, UCLA.

Our local conference host, the Southern California Mountains Foundation (SCMF) believes connecting communities to our public lands is the key to their survival. They mobilize individuals to inspire and engage in environmental citizenship.

SCMF promotes responsible use and stewardship of our natural environment by providing interpretive services, family programs, environmental education and youth and workforce development through conservation initiatives reaching diverse and urban communities. SCMF educates over 200,000 visitors and students annually to instill values and respect of our local land and promote the well-being of the forest. This work is accomplished through the efforts of 700+ volunteers and members. In partnering with California Naturalist program, SCMF aims to expand community connection to nature and the natural sciences by connecting participants to local resources through its many assets including the Big Bear Discovery Center, National Children's Forest, 7 Fire Lookouts and other visitor destinations in the community.
