The Center for Watershed Sciences at the University of California, Davis seeks to fill a non-tenured, academic term appointment as a Junior Specialist. This position will aid in interdisciplinary studies of abiotic and biotic conditions that affect the ecology of invertebrate and vertebrate organisms in estuaries. Apply by November 15. Job Duties
90% Research (e.g., field & lab studies, data synthesis, statistical analysis, writing, etc.)
5% Professional Activity (e.g., workshops, conferences, etc.)
5% University and Public Service (e.g., training, planning, equipment maintenance, etc.)
Physical Demands
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all health and safety protocols in the laboratory, field and on campus as required.
• Submit daily symptom tracking as required.
• Requires long periods of time sitting at a microscope in the lab, and long periods of standing and working on a small boat in the field.
• Squat, lift up to 50 pounds of survey nets and equipment, frequently using hands for fine-dexterity movement, grasping, reaching above shoulder level, pulling, bending, and crouching.
• Field work will require long hours under difficult conditions; excursions may involve full multiple days, flexibility in work schedule is necessary.
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor degree in ecology, biology, environmental studies, with a minimum of one year’s experience in laboratory and/or field research.
• Current Driver’s License.
• Experience with aquatic sampling methods.
• Experience synthesizing and analyzing collected data.
• Ability to process and analyze data using Excel, Access, ArcGIS and Program R.
• Some mechanical ability to assist with maintaining all research equipment and vehicles and to make minor repairs.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Experience in team-based work that requires communication, decision-making skills, cooperation and leadership.
• Ability to pass UCD boat safety training course at Bodega Marine Lab and to plan, lead, and pilot boat-based field projects.
• Ability to bend, squat, crouching and to pull and lift up to 50 pounds of survey nets and similar field equipment repetitively during field requiring long hours under difficult conditions; excursions may involve full multiple days, flexibility in work schedule is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in identification of zooplankton.
• Experience in small boat safety and handling.
• Identify California freshwater and estuarine fishes.
• Experience working independently and remain focused for long periods of time while conducting procedures in laboratory at the bench or microscope.
• Experience with data analysis and technical writing.
• Statistical knowledge.
• Ability to mentor and lead undergraduate and similar field assistants.
