Position Title
Ph.D. Student
Alex’s research centers on Reconciliation Ecology, with a particular focus on bridging the divide between ecological science and its practical application. She collaborates closely with the public, agricultural stakeholders, and resource management agencies to integrate ecosystem services into human-altered landscapes. For her PhD, Alex is investigating the impact of habitat management strategies on the behavior, ontogeny, and survival of Chinook salmon within reconciled ecosystems. She uses a variety of methods such as community sampling, and acoustic and PIT telemetry to understand salmon behavior and ecosystem dynamics. Alex is working to evaluate the risks and benefits of managing commercial rice fields as seasonal floodplain habitat for native fish species in California’s Sacramento Valley. On Putah Creek, she leads a research team of staff and undergraduates monitoring the establishment and development of a natal population of Chinook salmon. Alex is committed to advancing innovative, science-based approaches that support the resilience of aquatic ecosystems while balancing human needs and environmental stewardship.
