Before becoming an emeritus professor, I taught basic lecture courses on the biology of fishes (WFC 120, 120L) and on wildlife conservation for nonmajors (WFC 10). I also co-taught various field courses over the years, in fish biology, Nature and Culture, and Ecogeomorphology. In the latter course, Jeff Mount and I took rafting trips with students down remote rivers in Alaska, British Columbia and the Western USA. Funding came partly from an endowment and Jeff and I jointly held for five year, the President’s Chair in Undergraduate Education. I co-authored (with J. Cech) a widely used ichthyology text (5th edition 2004) and a freshman-level conservation biology text (with Michael Marchetti). Over the years I achieved some recognition for my teaching, including an Education Award from the American Fisheries Society (see resume). I still retain membership in the Graduate Group in Ecology and serve on occasional dissertation and thesis committees.
